Euphorbia dulcis Chameleon
Euphorbia dulcis 'Chameleon' is a compact, clump-forming perennial grown for its striking burgundy-purple foliage that deepens in colour through spring and early summer. In late spring, it produces small, yellow-green flower heads (cyathia) that contrast with the dark leaves, adding seasonal interest. Reaching around 30 to 40 cm high and wide, it is ideal for cottage, contemporary, woodland, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Foliage colour is best in full sun. Tolerates light frost and dry conditions once established. Space plants 30 to 40 cm apart. Cut back flower stems after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Wear gloves when handling, as the milky sap can be irritating. A hardy, colourful foliage plant that adds contrast and texture to mixed borders and shaded areas.
Trimming: Cut back spent flower stems after flowering in late spring to maintain a neat form and encourage fresh foliage. In autumn or early spring, remove any dead or damaged growth.
Deadheading: Not essential for repeat flowering, but removing old flower heads improves appearance and reduces self-seeding.
Fertilising: Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding, which can lead to lush, floppy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Euphorbia dulcis ‘Chameleon’ is drought-tolerant but appreciates occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. Ensure well-drained soil, especially in winter.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Aphids may occasionally appear on new growth-treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: Very low susceptibility to disease. Avoid overly wet or poorly drained conditions to prevent root rot. Wear gloves when pruning or handling, as the milky sap can irritate skin and eyes. Dispose of cuttings carefully.
