Echinacea purpurea PowWow White is a standout coneflower variety, celebrated for its abundant, large, pure white flowers, each spanning 10 cm across. These stunning blooms feature wide, overlapping, downward-arching petals that elegantly surround a vibrant golden-yellow cone. The plant is well-branched, with numerous sturdy stems that ensure it remains upright, providing a dazzling floral display from early to late summer, with the potential for additional sporadic flowering until frost. Its compact growth habit makes PowWow White particularly suitable for small gardens and containers, where its radiant beauty can be fully showcased.
Echinacea, commonly known as Coneflower, originates from the central and eastern parts of North America. Valued for its medicinal uses, Echinacea has successfully transitioned from the prairie to the garden, evolving from its traditional purple flowers to a wide variety of colours and forms. PowWow White grows to a height of 45-60 cm and spreads 30-40 cm wide, thriving in full sun and well-drained soils. It is remarkably tolerant of drought, heat, and humidity, making it an ideal choice for beds and borders, prairies and meadows, wildflower gardens, or cottage gardens. Excellent as cut flowers, PowWow White also encourages biodiversity by attracting butterflies and other pollinators. To ensure continuous flowering, spent flowers should be removed, and stems cut back. This variety freely self-seeds if some seed heads are left in place, and can be propagated by seed, division in spring or fall, or by root cuttings from late fall to early winter, allowing gardeners to spread its serene beauty throughout their outdoor spaces.
Trimming: Cut back stems to the ground in late autumn after the plant has finished flowering. This helps tidy the plant and encourages healthy new growth in the spring.
Deadheading: Regularly deadhead spent flowers to prolong the flowering season and promote further flowering. Leave some flower heads in place if you wish to allow for self-seeding or to provide winter interest.
Fertilising: Echinacea purpurea generally requires minimal fertilisation. Apply a light dose of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring if the soil is poor.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Echinacea purpurea is quite drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.
Pest Control: Watch for pests such as aphids and Japanese beetles. Hand-pick beetles and use insecticidal soap to manage aphids if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Be on the lookout for signs of powdery mildew and aster yellows. Powdery mildew appears as a white, powdery coating on leaves and can be treated with fungicides. Aster yellows causes distorted growth and yellowing leaves; affected plants should be removed to prevent the spread. Ensure proper spacing and air circulation to minimise disease risk."
