Echinacea 'Double Decker' is a unique and eye-catching perennial featuring large, rose-pink daisy-like flowers with a distinctive second tier of smaller petals emerging from the top of the central cone-typically developing in the plant's second year. Flowering from mid to late summer, it provides strong vertical interest and is highly attractive to bees and butterflies. With a clump-forming habit reaching around 80-100 cm high and 40-50 cm wide, it’s ideal for cottage, prairie, and pollinator-friendly garden styles.
Plant in full sun with well-draining, moderately fertile soil. Space plants 40-50 cm apart to allow for airflow and mature growth. Drought-tolerant once established and low-maintenance-deadhead to prolong flowering, or leave seed heads for winter interest and bird food. Cut back in late autumn or early spring to encourage fresh growth.
Trimming: Cut back stems to just above the basal foliage after flowering to tidy the plant and encourage a potential second flush. In late autumn, allow stems to stand for winter interest and wildlife value, then cut back to ground level in early spring.
Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers during summer to prolong flowering and maintain a neat appearance. Leave a few seed heads in autumn if desired for birds and self-seeding.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding, as Echinacea prefers leaner soils and excessive nutrients can lead to leggy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in dry spells. Once established, ‘Double Decker’ is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering in prolonged dry conditions. Ensure soil is free-draining.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though aphids and caterpillars may occasionally appear. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overcrowding to prevent fungal issues such as powdery mildew and aster yellows. Remove and destroy any plants showing signs of distorted growth or discoloured foliage. Avoid overhead watering and plant in well-drained soil.
