Clivia Japanese Hybrid
Clivia miniata Japanese Hybrid is a hardy, evergreen perennial prized for its broad, glossy green leaves and striking flower clusters in shades of orange, red, or yellow, typically appearing from late winter through to spring. Bred for compact growth and strong colour, it is ideal for shaded borders, underplanting, or containers.
Plant in partial to full shade with free-draining, organic-rich soil. Drought-tolerant once established and prefers protection from frost and direct afternoon sun. Water moderately and feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring and summer. Avoid disturbing roots. Space plants 40 to 50 centimetres apart for mass planting.
Grows to around 40 to 50 centimetres tall and wide.
Trimming: Remove spent flower stems at the base once flowering has finished. Trim off any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to keep the plant neat and healthy.
Deadheading: Not necessary for plant health but removing faded flowers can improve appearance and reduce seed development if not desired.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. During active growth (spring to early autumn), feed every four to six weeks with a diluted liquid fertiliser to support flowering and foliage health.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth, allowing the top of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when the plant enters dormancy. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.
Pest Control: Watch for scale, mealybugs, and aphids, especially on older leaves and leaf bases. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation and avoid excess moisture around the crown to prevent rot. Use well-draining soil and remove any yellowing or diseased leaves promptly to maintain plant health.
