Canna Bronze Orange
Notify MeCanna indica Bronze Orange is a lush, clump-forming perennial with broad bronze-purple leaves and bright orange flowers that appear from late spring to early autumn. It adds strong seasonal colour and a tropical feel to borders, subtropical gardens, and large containers.
Plant in full sun with rich, moist, free-draining soil. Water regularly during dry spells and apply fertiliser in the growing season. Protect from frost or lift rhizomes in colder areas. Space plants 50 to 60 centimetres apart to allow for mature spread. Cut back after flowering finishes in late autumn or early winter.
Grows to around 1.5 metres tall and 60 centimetres wide.
Trimming: Remove spent flower stems to support continued flowering. At season’s end, once foliage has died back, cut stems down to just above ground level. Tidy the plant during the growing period by removing any yellow or damaged leaves.
Deadheading: Regularly take off faded flowers to encourage ongoing flowering and maintain a neat appearance.
Fertilising: Use a slow-release fertiliser in early spring, then feed with a liquid fertiliser every four to six weeks during active growth to support healthy foliage and flowering.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during establishment and through extended dry spells. This variety prefers consistently damp soil, but avoid letting it sit in water.
Pest Control: Check for aphids and caterpillars on new leaves. Remove by hand or use insecticidal soap for heavier infestations.
Disease Management: Look out for canna rust and bacterial blight. Symptoms include orange spots or blackened leaf tips. Remove any affected leaves promptly and dispose of them. Provide good air flow and avoid wetting the foliage to help prevent spread.
