Bupleurum fruiticosum
Bupleurum fruticosum, commonly known as Shrubby Hare’s Ear, is a hardy evergreen shrub admired for its fine-textured, glossy green foliage and unique, chartreuse-yellow flowers. This Mediterranean native forms a dense, rounded habit, and its umbel-shaped flowers appear in summer, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Its robust and drought-tolerant nature makes it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners.
Bupleurum fruticosum is an excellent choice for informal hedging, mixed shrub borders, or coastal gardens, where its resilience to salt spray is an asset. Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring if grown in poor soil. Bupleurum typically thrives without additional feeding in well-drained, moderately fertile soil.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, this shrub is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering, though occasional deep watering during extended dry periods can boost growth.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but monitor for aphids on young growth. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot. This plant is otherwise highly disease-resistant.
