Brunnera Looking Glass
Notify MeBrunnera macrophylla Looking Glass is a striking, deciduous perennial prized for its luminous, silver heart-shaped leaves that develop a near-solid silver finish as the season progresses. In early to mid-Spring, it produces delicate clusters of sky-blue, forget-me-not-like flowers that hover above the foliage, adding a soft, airy charm.
Perfect for shaded borders, woodland plantings, and understorey areas, it suits cottage, naturalistic, and shade-loving garden styles.
Plant in partial to full shade in moist, well-draining, organic-rich soil. Protect from strong afternoon sun and keep soil consistently moist to avoid leaf scorch. Space plants 40–50cm apart to allow for mature spread.
Mature size: Clump-forming and tidy, reaching approximately 30–40cm tall and 50–60cm wide.
Trimming: Remove spent flower stems after flowering to maintain a tidy look and encourage stronger foliage development. In late autumn or early spring, cut back any old or damaged leaves to allow fresh new growth to emerge.
Deadheading: Not essential, but trimming off faded blooms can enhance appearance and prevent self-seeding if not desired.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser or compost to support healthy growth. Avoid overfeeding, which may reduce the intensity of the silvery leaf colouring.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells. Looking Glass prefers humus-rich, well-drained soil and does not tolerate prolonged dryness. Mulching in spring helps retain moisture and keep the roots cool.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though slugs and snails may occasionally feed on young foliage. Use traps, barriers, or pet-safe bait if damage occurs.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow around plants to prevent powdery mildew or leaf spot. Remove any affected leaves promptly and avoid overhead watering to minimise fungal risk. Ideal in part shade with morning sun and afternoon protection.
