Notify MeBrachyscome Lilac Buttons is a compact, spreading perennial prized for its soft green, finely divided foliage and delicate lilac daisy-like flowers with yellow centres. Flowering from early Spring through to late Autumn, it provides continuous colour and texture, making it a reliable choice for both containers and garden beds.
Well-suited to rockeries, borders, hanging baskets, and cottage-style plantings, it also complements contemporary and pollinator-friendly gardens.
Plant in full sun to light shade in free-draining soil. Water regularly during dry spells and trim lightly to encourage repeat flowering and a neat habit. Space plants 30–40cm apart for even coverage.
Mature size: Low-growing and spreading, typically reaching 20–25cm tall and 40–50cm wide.
Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact, mounding shape and encourage continued blooming. Pinch back straggly growth regularly to promote a dense, bushy habit. Rejuvenate older or leggy plants with a more substantial prune in early spring.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads frequently to extend the flowering period and keep the plant neat.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In pots or nutrient-poor soils, supplement with a diluted liquid feed every 4–6 weeks during the flowering season. Avoid overfeeding, which can lead to excessive foliage and fewer flowers.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and during dry weather. Lilac Buttons prefers moist, well-drained soil—avoid waterlogging. A light mulch helps retain moisture and keeps roots cool.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, aphids or spider mites may appear—treat early with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Good drainage and air circulation are essential to prevent fungal issues. Avoid overhead watering and remove any affected foliage to reduce the risk of mildew or rot.
