Bidens Campfire
Notify MeBidens Campfire is a vibrant, fast-growing perennial prized for its masses of fiery orange-red flowers that continue from spring through to late autumn. Its finely textured, fern-like foliage forms a compact mound, creating a striking contrast to the vivid flowering display. Heat-tolerant and low-maintenance, it brings long-lasting colour to garden beds and containers.
Ideal for cottage, coastal, contemporary, and pollinator-friendly gardens, it works well in borders, hanging baskets, and as a bright edging plant.
Thrives in full sun and prefers well-draining soil. Tolerates dry conditions once established and benefits from regular deadheading to extend flowering. Space 25–35 cm apart for a dense, spreading effect.
Mature size forms a tidy mound 25–30 cm tall and spreads up to 40 cm wide.
Trimming: Lightly trim to shape as needed throughout the growing season, particularly if the plant becomes leggy. Cutting back by one-third in midsummer can encourage compact growth and renewed flowering.
Deadheading: Regular deadheading encourages continuous flowering and maintains a tidy appearance. Pinch or snip off spent blooms to promote new bud formation.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 3–4 weeks during the active growing season to support vigorous flowering. Alternatively, use a slow-release fertiliser in early spring.
Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, especially while the plant is establishing. Once settled, 'Campfire' is moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture—avoid waterlogging.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but monitor for aphids or whitefly in warm, sheltered spots. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.
Disease Management: Rarely troubled by disease, but overly damp conditions can lead to root rot or fungal issues. Ensure good drainage and avoid overhead watering to prevent problems. Remove any affected plant material promptly.
