Bergamot Prairie Fine
Notify MeMonarda bradburiana Prairie Fine is a compact, early-flowering perennial prized for its soft lavender-pink flowers with delicate purple speckling, appearing from late spring into early summer. The aromatic foliage releases a spicy, minty scent and often develops attractive autumn tones, adding extended seasonal interest. More tolerant of dry conditions than other bergamots, it’s a reliable choice for naturalistic and low-maintenance plantings.
Ideal for prairie, wildflower, and cottage gardens, it attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects while blending beautifully with grasses and other sun-loving perennials.
Prefers full sun to light shade in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. Drought tolerant once established. Space plants approximately 40 cm apart to allow for spreading and airflow.
Mature size: Reaches 40–60 cm high and spreads 40–50 cm wide in a neat, clump-forming habit.
Trimming: After flowering, cut back spent flower stems to encourage a tidy habit and potential reblooming. In late autumn or early winter, trim the plant to ground level to prepare for the next growing season.
Deadheading: Regularly remove faded blooms to prolong the flowering period and maintain a neat appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poorer soils, a mid-season application of liquid fertiliser can support continued flowering and robust growth.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the establishment phase and dry spells. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging, as Monarda prefers well-drained soil.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids and spider mites during warm weather. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.
Disease Management: Susceptible to powdery mildew, particularly in humid or overcrowded conditions. Ensure good air circulation by spacing plants adequately, water at the base to keep foliage dry, and remove any affected leaves promptly. Applying a fungicide may be necessary if mildew persists.
