Bergamot Pink
Notify MeMonarda didyma Pink, commonly known as Pink Bergamot or Bee Balm, is a hardy, clump-forming perennial that produces vibrant pink, tufted flowers from early to late summer. These striking, aromatic flower heads sit above fragrant, minty green foliage, making it a magnet for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The plant's bold colour and scent bring life and movement to sunny garden spaces.
Well-suited to cottage, wildflower, and pollinator-friendly gardens, it also performs well in mixed borders and naturalistic plantings where its upright habit adds texture and height.
Thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. Mulch and water regularly during dry periods to prevent mildew. Space plants approximately 40–50 cm apart to allow airflow and healthy growth.
Mature size: Grows 60–90 cm high and spreads 40–60 cm wide in dense, upright clumps.
Trimming: Cut back spent flower stems after flowering to encourage a second flush and maintain a tidy appearance. In late autumn or early winter, trim stems down to just above ground level once they’ve died back.
Deadheading: Regularly remove spent blooms throughout the flowering season to extend flowering and reduce self-seeding.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poorer soils, a mid-season feed with liquid fertiliser can support continued flowering and healthy growth.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during the establishment phase and dry spells. Avoid waterlogging by ensuring good drainage.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids and spider mites in warm weather. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Susceptible to powdery mildew, especially in humid or overcrowded conditions. Ensure good airflow by spacing plants well, water at the base to keep foliage dry, and remove any affected leaves promptly. Use a fungicide if necessary.
