Begonia Dark Elegance
Notify MeBegonia Dark Elegance is a compact, fibrous-rooted variety admired for its rich, dark burgundy foliage and contrasting soft pink to pale rose flowers, which appear from spring through to autumn. Its velvety leaves and prolonged flowering season make it a standout in shaded areas, containers, and garden borders, offering both colour and texture where light is limited.
Well-suited to tropical, shaded courtyard, and woodland garden styles, it also performs beautifully in pots, hanging baskets, and underplantings for larger specimens.
Prefers part to full shade and grows best in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Protect from frost and excessive wetness. Space plants approximately 25–30 cm apart for a dense, compact display.
Mature size: Reaches 20–30 cm high and spreads 25–30 cm wide.
Trimming: Lightly trim to remove leggy or damaged stems and encourage a compact, bushy form. Pinching back growing tips during the active season promotes fuller growth, especially in container displays.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continued flowering and maintain a tidy appearance.
Fertilising: Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser, preferably one formulated for flowering plants. Avoid overfeeding, which can reduce flowering and stress the plant.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top layer of soil feels dry, and avoid letting the roots sit in excess water. Good drainage is essential, particularly in containers.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Treat early infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Remove affected leaves to prevent spread.
Disease Management: Susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis in humid or poorly ventilated conditions. Ensure good air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and remove any mouldy or decaying foliage. Treat with a fungicide if necessary.
