Baptisia Lemon Meringue
Notify MeBaptisia 'Lemon Meringue' is a striking, clump-forming perennial known for its vibrant spikes of bright lemon-yellow, pea-like flowers that appear from late spring to early summer. The upright flowers rise above attractive blue-green foliage, creating strong vertical interest and a long-lasting display. After flowering, decorative black seed pods add further seasonal appeal. Reaching approximately 90-100 cm high and wide, it suits prairie, cottage, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Thrives in full sun with free-draining, moderately fertile soil. Drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance. Space plants 70-90 cm apart to allow for mature spread and airflow. Avoid moving once planted, as it develops a deep taproot. Cut back stems in late autumn or early spring. An excellent choice for adding structure, colour, and pollinator value to sunny garden spaces.
Trimming: Cut back stems to ground level in late autumn or early winter once the foliage has died back. In early growth stages, pinching tips can encourage a bushier habit. Avoid moving or dividing mature plants, as they dislike root disturbance.
Deadheading: Not required, but removing spent flower spikes after flowering can tidy the plant. Leave seed pods if ornamental interest or self-seeding is desired.
Fertilising: Typically low-maintenance and doesn’t require regular feeding. In poor soils, apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support growth.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Baptisia ‘Lemon Meringue’ is very drought-tolerant and prefers free-draining soil. Avoid overwatering.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, aphids or leafhoppers may appear-treat early with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure good airflow and avoid excessive moisture to prevent root rot or fungal issues. Remove any damaged or discoloured foliage promptly.
