Azorella trifurcata, commonly known as New Zealand Carpet or Mat Cushion, is a low-growing, evergreen groundcover valued for its dense, mat-forming habit and finely textured, bright green foliage. In Spring to early Summer, it produces small, yellow-green flowers nestled within the foliage.
Ideal for rock gardens, alpine plantings, or as a ground-hugging filler between paving stones, Azorella trifurcata thrives in full sun to part shade with well-drained soil. It tolerates light frost, wind, and dry conditions once established. Space 20–30cm apart for seamless coverage.
Forms a tight, spreading mat up to 5cm tall and 30–50cm wide, providing year-round greenery and subtle seasonal interest.
Trimming: Lightly trim in early spring to maintain a neat, compact shape and remove any dead or leggy growth. Avoid hard pruning, as regrowth can be slow.
Deadheading: Not necessary, as the small, greenish-yellow flowers are low-maintenance and self-shedding.
Fertilising: Apply a light dressing of balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth, particularly in poor or rocky soils.
Watering: Water during the establishment phase and in prolonged dry periods. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and prefers free-draining soil—avoid overwatering.
Pest Control: Rarely affected by pests. No routine control is typically needed.
Disease Management: Very disease-resistant. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, especially in winter. Remove any decaying or discoloured growth promptly.
