Aubrieta Red
Notify MeAubrieta Red is a compact, evergreen perennial that forms a low, trailing mat covered in vibrant red-purple flowers from early to mid-Spring. Its soft grey-green foliage provides year-round groundcover, while the bold flowering display adds a bright pop of colour during the cooler months.
Ideal for rock, cottage, or coastal gardens, Aubrieta Red is perfect for edging, walls, slopes, or container planting. It performs best in full sun with free-draining soil and tolerates dry conditions once established. Space approximately 25–30 cm apart to allow for natural spreading.
Forms a low, spreading mat approximately 15 cm high and 40 cm wide.
Trimming: Trim back hard immediately after flowering in late spring to maintain a low, compact shape and encourage healthy new growth. This prevents the plant from becoming woody or sprawling.
Deadheading: Not strictly necessary, but removing spent flowers during flowering can improve appearance and may promote a light second flush.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can lead to excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Aubrieta Red is drought tolerant but will benefit from occasional watering during extended dry spells.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Watch for aphids on new growth-treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Prone to root rot if soil is poorly drained. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering. Remove old or damaged foliage to promote airflow and reduce fungal risk.
