Astrantia major Rubra is a striking clump-forming perennial known for its rich, ruby-red pincushion-like flowers surrounded by starry bracts. Flowering from late Spring through Summer, the intricate flower heads rise above deeply lobed green foliage, adding texture and colour to shaded or partially shaded garden areas.
Perfect for cottage gardens, woodland borders, and naturalistic plantings, Rubra thrives in part shade with moist, well-drained soil. It benefits from regular watering, particularly in dry periods, and should be spaced 30–40cm apart to encourage a healthy, full clump.
Matures to approximately 60cm tall and 45cm wide, forming a softly upright plant with long-lasting, showy flowers.
Trimming: Cut back spent stems to just above ground level after flowering to encourage a tidy second flush. In autumn, remove dead foliage to prepare for winter dormancy.
Deadheading: Regularly remove faded flowers to prolong flowering and reduce self-seeding.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring as new growth appears. A light mulch of compost can also boost nutrients and retain moisture.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, particularly during dry spells and while the plant is establishing. Astrantia dislikes dry or overly sandy conditions.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though snails and slugs may target young shoots. Use slug bait or natural deterrents as needed.
Disease Management: May be susceptible to powdery mildew in dry or crowded conditions. Space plants well, avoid overhead watering, and remove any affected foliage promptly. Use a fungicide if necessary.
