Astilbe Mixed Varieties

Astilbe spp. (Mixed Varieties) offer a vibrant blend of moisture-loving perennials, each producing dense, plume-like flower spikes in a mix of colours—ranging from soft whites and pinks to deep reds and purples—throughout mid to late Summer. Their finely divided, fern-like foliage provides attractive texture even when not in flower.

Ideal for shaded borders, woodland gardens, or alongside ponds and streams, these Astilbe varieties thrive in part to full shade with consistently moist, well-drained soil. They benefit from regular watering and should be spaced 40–50cm apart to accommodate their natural clumping habit.

Mature size varies slightly by variety but generally reaches 60–80cm tall and 50–60cm wide, forming lush, flowering mounds that bring reliable colour to shaded garden areas.

Trimming: Cut back flower stems after flowering to keep the plant tidy. In late autumn, trim foliage to ground level as it begins to die back naturally.

Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower spikes can improve appearance and redirect energy to the roots.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring, followed by a light top-up after flowering to support strong root development and next season’s growth.

Watering: Astilbe requires consistently moist soil—water regularly, particularly during dry spells and while establishing. Mulch can help retain moisture.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though slugs may occasionally nibble young shoots. Use slug bait or traps if needed.

Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease, but overly damp conditions can encourage root rot. Ensure soil is moist but well-drained, and remove any rotting foliage promptly.
