Astilbe chinensis Nana

Its dwarf habit and strong flowering performance make it ideal for edging shaded borders, underplanting trees, or mass planting in moist, woodland-style settings. Reaching just 25-30 cm high and spreading to around 30-40 cm wide, it brings soft texture and lasting colour to cottage, woodland, and formal gardens.
Best planted in partial shade with consistently moist, humus-rich soil. It can tolerate more sun if soil moisture is maintained. Space plants 25-30 cm apart and apply mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid dry conditions to ensure strong flowering.
Trimming: Cut back flower stems after flowering to tidy the plant. In late autumn or early winter, remove spent foliage down to ground level to prepare for dormancy.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower heads can improve appearance and may encourage a tidier clump.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring or use a liquid feed monthly during the growing season to support healthy foliage and flowering. Astilbes benefit from rich, organic soil.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist-Astilbes dislike drying out. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in summer, and mulch annually to retain moisture.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though young growth may occasionally attract slugs. Use organic slug controls if needed.
Disease Management: Rarely troubled by disease. Ensure good drainage and airflow to prevent fungal issues like powdery mildew. Remove any affected foliage if symptoms appear.
