Astilbe Bridal Veil
Astilbe 'Bridal Veil' is a graceful, clump-forming perennial prized for its airy, creamy-white flower plumes that appear above finely divided, deep green foliage in early to mid-summer. The tall, arching flower stems give a soft, flowing appearance, making it a lovely choice for brightening shaded garden areas. Growing to around 60-80 cm high and 50-60 cm wide, it suits woodland, cottage, and shaded border garden styles.
Plant in partial to full shade with moist, humus-rich, free-draining soil. Consistent moisture is essential, especially during dry periods. Space plants 50-60 cm apart for mature spread and airflow. Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Cut back spent flower stems after blooming and tidy foliage in late autumn. A reliable, low-maintenance perennial that adds elegance and texture to shaded garden spaces.
Trimming: Cut back spent flower stems after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance. In late autumn or early winter, remove all top growth to ground level once the foliage has died back naturally.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing faded flower plumes can improve overall appearance and reduce self-seeding.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. In nutrient-poor soils, a second light feed in mid-summer can help sustain strong foliage and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and throughout dry periods. Astilbe ‘Bridal Veil’ prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil-mulch annually to help retain soil moisture and keep roots cool.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, young shoots may be nibbled by slugs-use organic slug control methods if necessary.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew and other fungal issues. Avoid overhead watering, and remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly. Well-drained, humus-rich soil helps prevent root rot.
