Armeria maritima Rubra
Notify MeArmeria maritima Rubra is a hardy, low-growing perennial producing rich ruby-red, globe-shaped flowers above compact mounds of slender, dark green foliage. Flowering from early spring through to early summer, it adds vibrant colour and texture to rockeries, edging, and alpine settings. Well-suited to coastal, cottage, and alpine gardens, it performs best in full sun with well-drained soil. Space plants 20–25cm apart to encourage dense, tidy growth.
Mature Size: Forms a cushion-like mound reaching around 20cm high and 25cm wide.
Trimming: Trim back spent flower stems to encourage repeat flowering and maintain a tidy appearance. In late autumn or early spring, remove any dead or damaged foliage to keep the clump neat.
Deadheading: Regularly remove faded flower heads to prolong the flowering season and support a tidy, compact form.
Fertilising: Armeria prefers lean soils, so fertilising is usually unnecessary. If growth appears weak, apply a light dose of low-nitrogen fertiliser in early spring.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Armeria is drought-tolerant and prefers well-drained soil. Avoid overwatering, especially in winter.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though occasional aphids may appear. Treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Can be susceptible to crown rot in poorly drained soils. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid waterlogged conditions. Remove any rotting foliage promptly to prevent spread.
