Arenaria Montana
Notify MeArenaria montana, commonly known as mountain sandwort, is a low-growing, evergreen perennial forming a dense mat of deep green foliage topped with masses of pure white, star-like flowers in late spring to early summer. Its tidy, spreading habit and crisp floral display make it ideal for softening edges and brightening up compact spaces.
Perfect for rockeries, edging paths, and alpine or cottage-style gardens. Complements formal, Mediterranean, and naturalistic planting schemes.
Thrives in full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Tolerates dry conditions once established. Space plants 25–30 cm apart for a seamless, ground-hugging effect.
Mature size: Forms a dense, spreading mat 10–15 cm tall and up to 30 cm wide.
Trimming: Lightly trim back after flowering in late spring to maintain a compact, mound-forming habit and encourage fresh growth. Remove any straggly or damaged stems throughout the season as needed.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flowers can help tidy the plant and may encourage a light second flush.
Fertilising: Apply a light dose of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Avoid overfeeding, as Arenaria montana thrives in low to moderately fertile soils.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and during dry periods. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but will perform best with occasional watering in extended dry spells. Ensure free-draining soil to prevent root issues.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Keep an eye out for slugs or snails, which may nibble on young growth—use barriers or organic pellets if needed.
Disease Management: Susceptible to root rot in waterlogged soil. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overhead watering. Maintain airflow by spacing plants appropriately.
