Aquilegia Winky Double Dark Blue White

Aquilegia Winky Double Dark Blue White is a compact and eye-catching columbine, distinguished by its fully double, upward-facing flowers in rich dark blue with crisp white centres. Flowering from late spring into early summer, the intricate, layered blooms sit neatly above mounds of finely divided, bluish-green foliage. This variety is bred for uniformity and strong performance, even in smaller garden spaces.

An excellent choice for cottage gardens, shaded borders, and containers. Complements romantic, woodland, and informal garden styles.

Best planted in full sun to part shade in well-drained, fertile soil. Keep soil evenly moist during the growing season and deadhead to encourage continued flowering. Space plants 25–30 cm apart for a full, tidy appearance.

Mature size: Reaches 30–40 cm tall with a compact, bushy habit.

Trimming: Cut back spent flower stems after flowering to maintain a tidy habit and encourage potential reblooming. In late autumn or early winter, trim all foliage to ground level as the plant enters dormancy.

Deadheading: Regularly deadhead to prolong the flowering period and reduce self-seeding. This also helps the plant focus energy on root and foliage growth.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new growth appears. Aquilegias prefer moderately fertile soil and don’t require heavy feeding.

Watering: Water well during the establishment phase and during dry periods, especially in spring and early summer. Once established, this variety is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from supplemental watering in prolonged dry spells.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids and leaf miners. Remove affected foliage and use insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed. Protect young shoots from slugs and snails using organic deterrents or physical barriers.

Disease Management: Powdery mildew can occur in humid or crowded conditions. Look for white, powdery patches on leaves. Remove infected foliage, ensure good air circulation, and avoid overhead watering to minimise risk.
