Aquilegia Dragonfly is a striking columbine variety featuring elegant, long-spurred flowers in a range of vivid bi-colours, including deep purples, blues, pinks, and whites. Flowering from late spring to early summer, the intricate blooms rise gracefully above soft, lacy foliage, adding height and visual interest to mixed borders and garden beds.
An excellent addition to cottage gardens, woodland plantings, and informal borders. Complements romantic, naturalistic, or traditional garden styles.
Thrives in full sun to partial shade with well-drained, humus-rich soil. Prefers consistent moisture without waterlogging. Space plants 30–40 cm apart to allow for healthy growth and airflow.
Mature size: Grows to approximately 60–75 cm tall with a spread of 30–40 cm.
Trimming: Cut back spent flower stems after flowering to encourage a tidy appearance and possible repeat flowering. In late autumn or early winter, trim foliage down to ground level to prepare for dormancy.
Deadheading: Regularly deadhead to extend the flowering period and reduce self-seeding, unless you wish to allow natural reseeding.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new growth appears. Aquilegias are light feeders and thrive in moderately fertile soil.
Watering: Water well during the establishment phase and in dry spells, particularly in spring and early summer when flowering occurs. Once established, they tolerate moderate drought but benefit from occasional deep watering in prolonged dry periods.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids and leaf miners—remove affected leaves or treat with insecticidal soap if necessary. Protect young growth from slugs and snails using organic pellets or physical barriers.
Disease Management: Susceptible to powdery mildew, particularly in crowded or humid conditions. Look for white, powdery coatings on foliage. Remove infected leaves, ensure good airflow, and avoid overhead watering to reduce risk.
