Notify MeAjuga Burgundy Lace is a stunning groundcover variety known for its unique, variegated foliage. The scalloped leaves feature a mix of burgundy, cream, and green tones that bring vibrant colour year-round. In late spring to early summer, spikes of rich violet-blue flowers rise above the foliage, creating a striking contrast. This low-maintenance plant spreads quickly, forming a dense, weed-suppressing mat that is perfect for adding interest to shaded areas.
Ideal for cottage, woodland, or modern gardens, Burgundy Lace thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It’s excellent for borders, rockeries, or as underplanting for shrubs and trees. Space plants 20–30 cm apart for effective ground coverage.
Mature size: Grows up to 10–15 cm in height and spreads 30–60 cm, forming a vibrant, spreading groundcover.
Trimming: Trim back spent flower spikes and any untidy or leggy growth after flowering to encourage fresh growth and maintain a compact form.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote vigorous growth and vibrant foliage. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to weaker plants.
Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the establishment phase. Ajuga prefers moist but well-drained soil and can tolerate occasional drought once established.
Pest Control: Monitor for slugs and snails, which may damage the leaves. Use organic or chemical deterrents as needed.
Disease Management: Keep an eye out for crown rot, which may occur in poorly drained soil. Ensure proper spacing to improve air circulation and prevent fungal issues. Remove and dispose of any affected plants to stop the spread.
