Ajuga Black Scallop
Notify MeAjuga Black Scallop is a striking groundcover with deep, glossy, near-black leaves that have a scalloped texture, creating dramatic foliage interest year-round. In late spring to early summer, it produces vibrant spikes of intense blue flowers, which contrast beautifully against the dark foliage. This low-growing plant spreads quickly, forming a dense, weed-suppressing mat, perfect for adding colour and texture to shaded areas.
Ideal for woodland, cottage, or modern gardens, Black Scallop thrives in partial to full shade but can tolerate some sun in cooler climates. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and is perfect for use in borders, rockeries, or as underplanting beneath shrubs and trees. Space plants 20–30 cm apart for effective coverage.
Mature size: Grows up to 10–15 cm in height and spreads 30–60 cm, forming a dense, spreading groundcover.
Trimming: Trim back spent flower spikes and any untidy or leggy growth after flowering to encourage fresh growth and maintain a compact form.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote vigorous growth and vibrant foliage. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to weaker plants.
Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the establishment phase. Ajuga prefers moist but well-drained soil and can tolerate occasional drought once established.
Pest Control: Monitor for slugs and snails, which may damage the leaves. Use organic or chemical deterrents as needed.
Disease Management: Keep an eye out for crown rot, which may occur in poorly drained soil. Ensure proper spacing to improve air circulation and prevent fungal issues. Remove and dispose of any affected plants to stop the spread.
