Notify MeActaea simplex Black Negligee is a stunning deciduous perennial prized for its deeply divided, near-black foliage and fragrant flower spikes. In late Summer to Autumn, tall, slender stems produce elegant white flowers with a soft pink blush, contrasting beautifully against the dark foliage. The flowers have a sweet, musky fragrance, making this plant as delightful to the senses as it is visually striking.
Perfect for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or as a dramatic feature in partially shaded areas. Thrives in partial to full shade and prefers humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil. Regular watering is essential to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Space plants 50–60 cm apart to accommodate its bold, arching habit.
Reaches a mature height of 1–1.5 metres when in flower, with a spread of 60–80 cm, forming a striking upright silhouette.
- Trimming: Cut back faded flower spikes in late summer to maintain a tidy appearance. In late autumn or early spring, cut back old foliage to the ground to encourage fresh growth.
- Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser or organic compost in early spring to promote healthy growth and flowering. Avoid over-fertilising, as it can reduce flowering.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods, as Actaea prefers a damp, well-drained environment. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture.
- Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but keep an eye out for slugs and snails, which may damage young foliage. Use organic slug deterrents if necessary.
- Disease Management: Watch for powdery mildew in humid conditions. Ensure good air circulation around the plant and water at the base to avoid wetting foliage. Apply a fungicide if mildew develops.
