Acorus gramineus Variegatus, commonly known as variegated sweet flag, is a compact, semi-evergreen perennial with elegant, grass-like foliage. The slender leaves feature creamy white and green stripes, adding a bright and textural element to the garden. In Summer, it may produce inconspicuous greenish flower spikes. Its clump-forming habit and tolerance for wet conditions make it ideal for water features and damp areas.
Perfect for pond edges, rain gardens, or as a ground cover in boggy areas. Also suitable for containers or mixed borders where consistent moisture can be provided. Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist to wet soil, though it will tolerate shallow water planting. Space plants 20–30 cm apart for a dense effect.
Reaches a mature height of 20–30 cm with a spread of 30–40 cm, forming a tidy, arching clump.
- Trimming: Remove dead or damaged foliage in late winter or early spring to keep the plant looking fresh. For variegated varieties, trim back any entirely green shoots to preserve the variegation.
- Fertilising: Acorus thrives in moist, nutrient-rich soil and rarely requires fertilisation. If needed, apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support growth.
- Watering: Ensure consistent moisture, especially for water garden or bog plantings. Keep the soil wet or waterlogged for best results. Avoid letting the soil dry out.
- Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but occasionally slugs may feed on foliage. Use slug deterrents if necessary.
- Disease Management: Disease issues are rare. Ensure good water quality and avoid stagnant conditions to prevent fungal or bacterial problems.
