Sophora prostrata
Sophora prostrata is a distinctive New Zealand native shrub with a naturally divaricating habit, forming a dense network of zig-zagging branches clothed in small green leaves. Its unusual structure gives it strong visual character throughout the year, making it an excellent choice for adding texture, form, and architectural interest to the garden.
In Spring, it produces bright yellow flowers that hang delicately among the branchlets, adding seasonal colour and extra appeal. It is well suited to native gardens, contemporary landscapes, gravel gardens, and mixed shrub borders, and works especially well as a feature plant where its branching habit can be clearly seen.
This plant grows best in full sun to light shade in well-drained soil and handles dry conditions well once established. It is also tolerant of wind and suits exposed or coastal sites, provided drainage is good. Space plants around 1.5m to 2m apart so they have room to develop their natural form.
At maturity, it forms a dense, intricately branched shrub reaching around 2m high and 2m wide.
Trimming: Sophora prostrata needs very little pruning beyond light shaping and tidying. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing stems to maintain its distinctive form, and trim lightly after flowering if needed to keep growth compact.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth, particularly in poor soils or container plantings. Avoid overfeeding, as this can encourage soft growth.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase so the plant develops a strong root system. Once established, Sophora prostrata is fairly tolerant of dry conditions, but it will benefit from watering during extended dry periods.
Pest control: This plant is generally low maintenance, though aphids may sometimes appear on fresh growth. Check stems and new shoots regularly, and treat with insecticidal soap or another suitable control if required.
Disease management: Sophora prostrata is not especially prone to disease, but poorly drained conditions can lead to root problems. Watch for yellowing leaves, wilting or dieback, improve drainage, and remove any affected growth if issues arise.
