Pseudowintera Red Leopard

A hardy evergreen shrub that has lime-green foliage with rich burgundy markings that provide good foliar colour to the garden. As the days start to cool in autumn the foliage darkens to burgundy, making it a really good plant for winter interest. Plant in borders and containers. Used to form low hedging it may be trimmed to shape. Requires moist, free-draining soil in full sun or part shade.
Trimming: Trim Pseudowintera ‘Red Leopard’ lightly in spring or after flowering to maintain a compact shape and remove dead, damaged, or crossing growth. Avoid heavy pruning, as it naturally forms a dense, tidy shrub.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser, or apply compost around the base to support healthy foliage growth. Avoid heavy feeding, which can encourage soft growth.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Once established, provide deep watering during extended dry periods, especially in hot, dry, or exposed sites.
Pest control: Watch for scale, aphids, and mites. Signs include sticky honeydew, sooty mould, distorted new growth, or fine webbing. Treat light infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
Disease management: Look out for leaf spot and root rot, particularly in damp, poorly drained conditions. Signs include spotted or yellowing leaves, wilting, poor vigour, or blackened roots. Remove affected foliage, improve drainage and airflow, avoid overwatering, and use an appropriate fungicide if disease persists.
