Pseudopanax Toru
Notify MePseudopanax toru is a handsome New Zealand native shrub or small tree recognised for its glossy, leathery, three-lobed leaves and upright, tidy form. The dark green foliage gives the plant a lush, tropical appearance, while its branching habit develops into an attractive rounded canopy as it matures. Small greenish flowers appear in summer, followed by dark berries that attract birds.
Ideal for native, coastal, and low-maintenance gardens, Pseudopanax toru is excellent for feature planting, screening, or adding a bold structural element to mixed native borders. It thrives in full sun to part shade with free-draining soil and is tolerant of wind, coastal exposure, and light frost once established. Space approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart for screening or group planting.
Forms an upright shrub or small tree reaching around 3 to 6 metres high and 2 to 3 metres wide.
Trimming: Minimal pruning is needed. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches to maintain a tidy structure. Light shaping can be done in late winter or early spring if necessary, but avoid heavy pruning into mature wood.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release general-purpose fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, supplement with a balanced liquid feed every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season to support healthy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Toru is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Ensure soil is well-draining.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally check for scale or aphids, especially on young growth. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot and remove any discoloured or damaged foliage. Maintain airflow around the plant to reduce the risk of fungal issues.
