Podocarpus totara, commonly known as Totara, is a majestic evergreen tree native to New Zealand. Renowned for its durable timber and cultural significance, Totara features needle-like, dark green leaves and a dense, upright growth habit. The tree's reddish-brown bark peels in long strips, adding to its visual appeal. This versatile tree is ideal for use as a specimen tree, in mixed native plantings, or as a hedge or windbreak.
Totara thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It is adaptable to various soil types, including loamy and clay soils. This hardy tree is drought-tolerant once established and can withstand cold conditions, making it suitable for a range of climates. Regular watering during the establishment phase is essential, and light pruning helps maintain its shape and encourage dense growth. Space plants about 4-6 metres apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth.
At maturity, Podocarpus totara can reach a height of 20-30 metres with a spread of 6-8 metres, forming a tall and stately tree. Its dense foliage provides excellent shelter and privacy, making it an ideal choice for windbreaks and hedging.
