Podocarpus aurea

Podocarpus aurea is an attractive, slow-growing evergreen conifer native to New Zealand, known for its fine, narrow foliage that emerges in soft golden-yellow tones before maturing to light green. Its upright, columnar habit and graceful texture make it ideal for adding structure, contrast, and year-round interest to native, formal, or low-maintenance garden settings. Typically grows to around 2-4 metres high and 1-2 metres wide, depending on site conditions and age.

Thrives in full sun to partial shade with well-draining soil. Tolerant of wind and coastal exposure once established, but benefits from some shelter in harsher conditions. Space plants 1-1.5 metres apart for screening or as a vertical accent. Requires minimal pruning but can be lightly shaped in late winter to maintain a tidy form. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Trimming: Trim lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain a tidy shape, especially if grown as a hedge or screen. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. It responds well to pruning but avoid cutting into old wood unless necessary.

Deadheading: Not applicable, as Podocarpus is grown for its foliage and form, not for ornamental flowers.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth and foliage colour. In poor soils, a second feed in mid-summer may be beneficial.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Podocarpus aurea is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods. Ensure soil is well-drained.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but mealybugs or scale may occasionally occur. Treat infestations early with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.

Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Remove any discoloured or dead foliage promptly to maintain plant health.
