Pittosporum cornifolium
Pittosporum cornifolium is a distinctive, evergreen New Zealand native shrub or epiphytic climber, valued for its glossy, leathery green leaves and unique growth habit. In late winter to spring, it produces small, star-shaped yellow-green flowers with reddish centres, followed by bright orange seed capsules that split open to reveal black seeds, adding ornamental and ecological interest. Typically growing 50 to 80 cm high and wide when grown as a shrub, or climbing higher if supported, it suits native, woodland, rock, or shaded garden styles.
Plant in partial shade with free-draining, humus-rich soil. Tolerates coastal conditions, damp shade, and light frost. Space plants 40 to 60 cm apart for group plantings or allow to climb over rocks, logs, or walls for a more naturalistic effect. Requires minimal maintenance - remove spent seed capsules and prune lightly to shape if needed. A compact, slow-growing native that adds texture, colour, and habitat value to sheltered, shaded areas.
Trimming: Minimal pruning is needed. Lightly trim in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged growth and to shape if desired. This naturally compact, slow-growing New Zealand native maintains a tidy form without frequent pruning.
Deadheading: Not required, but spent flowers can be removed to keep the plant tidy and highlight the foliage.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser suitable for natives. In poor soils or containers, a second light feed in midsummer may help support healthy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Pittosporum cornifolium is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. Ensure well-drained soil, especially in winter.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, aphids or scale may appear - treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Very low susceptibility to disease. Avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root issues. Maintain good airflow and remove any discoloured or unhealthy foliage to support plant health. Suitable for rockeries, walls, or container culture.
