Pellaea rotundifolia
Notify MePellaea rotundifolia (commonly known as the Button Fern) is a compact, evergreen fern native to New Zealand, admired for its distinctive round, leathery leaflets arranged neatly along arching black stems. Its tidy, clump-forming habit and low-maintenance nature make it an excellent choice for shaded gardens or indoor spaces.
Ideal for woodland, tropical, or fern-themed gardens, Pellaea rotundifolia is perfect for underplanting, shaded borders, or container growing - indoors or out. It thrives in partial to full shade with moist, free-draining soil rich in organic matter and appreciates consistent moisture without being waterlogged. Protect from frost and drying winds. Space approximately 30-40 cm apart in garden settings.
Forms a compact, arching clump approximately 30 cm high and 40 cm wide.
Trimming: Remove dead, yellowing, or damaged fronds at the base to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage new growth. Light pruning throughout the year keeps the plant compact and healthy.
Fertilising: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce or stop feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can damage roots and lead to leaf burn.
Watering: Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry. Button Fern prefers evenly moist (but not soggy) soil. It is more tolerant of dry conditions than most ferns but does best with consistent moisture and humidity.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though indoor plants may occasionally attract scale or mealybugs. Remove pests manually or treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Avoid overhead watering and stagnant humidity. Improve airflow if mould or fungal spots appear, and remove affected fronds promptly.
