Pachystegia minor
Notify MePachystegia minor is a compact, evergreen New Zealand native shrub admired for its leathery silver-grey leaves with soft, felted undersides and striking white daisy-like flowers with golden centres in late spring and summer. Its tidy, mounding form and distinctive foliage bring texture and contrast to dry, exposed sites and coastal plantings.
Ideal for coastal, alpine, and native gardens, Pachystegia minor is perfect for rockeries, borders, or mass planting on slopes. It thrives in full sun with free-draining, poor to moderately fertile soil and is highly tolerant of wind, salt spray, and drought once established. Space approximately 50 to 70 cm apart for group plantings.
Forms a compact, rounded shrub reaching around 30 to 60 cm high and 60 to 80 cm wide.
Trimming: Minimal trimming is required. Remove spent flower heads and any damaged or dead leaves after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance. Avoid cutting into woody stems, as regrowth may be slow.
Deadheading: Recommended. Remove spent flower heads to tidy the plant and prevent self-seeding if not desired.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release, low-phosphorus fertiliser in early spring. Avoid overfeeding, especially with high-nitrogen fertilisers, as this can encourage excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and prefers dry, free-draining soils. Avoid overwatering or wet feet, especially in cooler months.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally check for aphids on new growth. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Root and crown rot can occur in poorly drained or overly wet soils. Ensure sharp drainage and avoid mulching directly against the crown. Remove any yellowing or diseased foliage to maintain plant health.
