Meryta sinclairii, also known as the puka or pukanui, is a type of evergreen tree, native to New Zealand. It has large leaves and can grow up to a height of approximately 8 metres. This tree is best suited as a specimen tree, particularly in the rear of a large border featuring native plants or to create a tropical atmosphere. It is highly suitable for coastal gardens as it is resistant to both wind and salt and can also be used as a large informal hedge.
Trimming: Trim lightly in spring to maintain shape and remove any damaged, yellowing or overcrowded growth. Avoid hard pruning, as Meryta sinclairii responds best to gentle shaping.
Fertilising: Feed in spring and summer with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support healthy leaf growth. In poorer soils, an occasional application of liquid fertiliser during the warmer months can be beneficial.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase to help develop a strong root system. Once established, Meryta sinclairii is fairly tolerant of short dry periods, but it benefits from deep watering during extended hot or dry weather.
Pest control: Watch for scale insects, mealybugs and aphids, particularly on sheltered plants. Treat infestations with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap, ensuring good coverage on both sides of the leaves.
Disease management: This plant is generally trouble-free, but root rot can occur in poorly drained soils. Signs include yellowing leaves, wilting and a general loss of vigour. Improve drainage and reduce watering where needed; badly affected plants may be difficult to recover.
