The small, glossy leaves are splashed with cream, green, and soft pink tones, deepening in colour during cooler months. Its dense, tidy form and colourful year-round foliage make it a versatile choice for structured or informal plantings.
Perfect for native, coastal, contemporary, or cottage gardens, Lophomyrtus traversii Variegata is ideal for low hedging, borders, or container planting. It thrives in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil and is tolerant of light frost and coastal conditions. Light pruning helps maintain shape and density. Space approximately 50-60 cm apart when planting as a hedge.
Forms a compact, upright shrub approximately 1.2 metres high and 1 metre wide.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage dense, bushy growth. It responds well to clipping, making it ideal for hedging or topiary. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood.
Deadheading: Not necessary, as flowers are small and self-cleaning.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. In poor soils or containers, a second light feed in mid-summer can help maintain vibrant foliage colour and vigour.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant but performs best with occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, aphids or scale may appear-treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root issues. Maintain good airflow by avoiding overcrowding and remove any yellowing or damaged foliage to reduce the risk of fungal problems.
