Leptospermum Wiri Kerry
Leptospermum Wiri Kerry is a compact evergreen shrub admired for its vibrant, double, red flowers, which appear freely from spring into early summer. The small, dense reddish-bronze foliage gives it a tidy appearance year-round, while the vivid flowering display adds strong seasonal colour and texture to the garden.
Its naturally bushy habit makes it an excellent choice for borders, mixed shrub plantings, coastal gardens, and feature planting in smaller spaces. It also suits informal hedging and low-maintenance landscapes, where dependable colour and neat structure are important.
For best performance, plant in full sun in well-drained soil. It handles dry conditions well once established and is a reliable option for exposed positions. Allow around 50-80cm spacing so it can develop a full, rounded shape without crowding.
At maturity, it forms a dense, rounded shrub about 70cm tall and 50cm wide.
Trimming: Leptospermum Wiri Kerry is naturally compact, so it usually only needs light trimming. Tidy it after flowering to maintain a dense shape and remove any dead, damaged or straggly growth. Avoid hard pruning into old wood.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential, but you can lightly remove spent flowers if you want to keep the plant looking neat for longer through the flowering season.
Fertilising: Apply a light slow-release fertiliser in spring only if growth seems weak or the soil is poor. Avoid heavy feeding, as this compact mānuka is valued for its tidy habit and generally performs well in ordinary, well-drained garden soils.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase so the roots can settle in well. Once established, Leptospermum Wiri Kerry is hardy and reasonably tolerant of dry periods, but it will benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells. Free-draining soil is important.
Pest control: Check for scale insects, caterpillars and spider mites, especially in warm or dry weather. Watch for sticky residue, chewed foliage, fine webbing or leaf discolouration, and treat early with insecticidal soap, a suitable garden spray, or by pruning out badly affected growth. These pest notes are based on common issues for mānuka rather than cultivar-specific reports.
Disease management: The main risk is root stress or root rot in poorly drained soil. Look for yellowing, thinning growth, dieback or poor vigour. Improve drainage, avoid overwatering, and remove affected stems if dieback develops. Good airflow will also help reduce disease pressure.
