Leptospermum Red Damask
Leptospermum 'Red Damask' is a striking, evergreen shrub admired for its deep crimson-red, double flowers that appear in abundance from late winter through spring. These richly coloured flowers contrast beautifully with the fine, aromatic green foliage, creating a vivid focal point that also attracts bees and other pollinators. With a dense, upright form reaching around 1.5 to 2 metres high and 1 to 1.5 metres wide, it suits cottage, coastal, native and low-maintenance garden styles.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Tolerates drought, wind, light frost and coastal exposure once established. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for hedging or grouped planting. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. A tough, colourful shrub that provides vibrant seasonal interest and year-round structure in sunny, well-drained garden spaces.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to shape the plant and encourage dense, bushy growth. Avoid hard pruning into old wood, as it may not regenerate. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser suitable for native plants. Avoid high-nitrogen products, which can cause overly soft growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Leptospermum ‘Red Damask’ is drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Ensure free-draining soil to avoid root rot.
Pest Control: Typically pest-resistant. Watch for scale insects or sooty mould in humid or sheltered spots - treat early with insecticidal soap or neem oil if required.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal diseases such as leaf spot. Avoid overhead watering, and remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly. Plant in well-drained soil and avoid heavy, water-retentive sites.
