Leptospermum Martini
Leptospermum scoparium Martini is a variety of Mānuka that features clusters of vibrant pink flowers with contrasting dark centres, creating a visually stunning display. The fine, dark green foliage is aromatic and glossy, adding year-round interest to the garden.
Leptospermum Martini thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil, though it can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils. This plant is particularly well-suited to coastal conditions and can handle exposure and moderate frost. It is low-maintenance and benefits from regular pruning and a long-term, slow-release fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering. Space plants about 1-1.5 metres apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth.
Ideal for use in mixed borders, as a feature plant, or in a flowering hedge, Leptospermum Martini also looks fantastic in decorative pots and is excellent for general landscaping. At maturity, it reaches a height of approximately 1.5-2 metres and a spread of about 1-1.5 metres, forming a dense, upright shrub. Its vibrant flowers attract pollinators, enhancing the ecological value of your garden.
Trimming: Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a dense, compact shape and remove any dead, damaged, or wayward growth. Avoid cutting back into old bare wood, as regrowth may be limited.
Deadheading: Deadheading is generally not required, but spent flowers can be lightly removed after flowering if a tidier appearance is desired.
Fertilising: Apply a light dressing of slow-release fertiliser in spring, using a formulation suitable for native or low-phosphorus plants. Avoid overfeeding, as this can encourage soft growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment, especially through dry or windy periods. Once established, Leptospermum Martini is reasonably drought tolerant, but will benefit from occasional deep watering during extreme dry spells.
Pest control: Monitor for scale, aphids, and webbing caterpillars, which may cause sticky residue, sooty mould, distorted growth, or chewed foliage. Treat with horticultural oil or an appropriate insect spray if infestations become noticeable.
Disease management: Watch for root rot in heavy or poorly drained soils, with symptoms such as yellowing foliage, wilting, or dieback. Improve drainage, avoid overwatering, and remove affected growth where practical.
