Leptospermum lanigerum
Notify MeLeptospermum lanigerum, commonly known as woolly tea tree, is a hardy, evergreen shrub or small tree native to Australia. It features narrow, grey-green, softly hairy leaves and produces masses of white to pale pink, five-petalled flowers in late spring and early summer. The rough, textured bark and soft foliage provide year-round interest, while the flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Typically reaches 2 to 5 metres high and 2 to 3 metres wide, making it suitable for native, coastal, woodland and low-maintenance garden styles.
Plant in full sun to light shade with free-draining soil. Tolerates wind, coastal conditions, drought and light frost once established. Space plants 1.5 to 2.5 metres apart for shelter, screening or naturalistic groupings. Prune after flowering to maintain shape or control size. A tough and attractive shrub that offers structure, wildlife value and resilience in exposed or dry garden conditions.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape and prevent the plant from becoming leggy. Avoid cutting into old wood, as regrowth can be slow or absent. Remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring.
Deadheading: Not required, but removing spent flowers can improve appearance, especially in cultivated garden settings.
Fertilising: Apply a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser in early spring - preferably one suitable for native plants. In poor soils, a second light application in midsummer may support overall health and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Leptospermum lanigerum is drought-tolerant but will perform best with occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Requires free-draining soil and dislikes heavy or waterlogged conditions.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, scale or sooty mould may appear, especially in humid conditions - treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases such as leaf spot or root rot. Remove any diseased foliage promptly and plant in well-drained soil to maintain long-term health.
