Laurelia novae-zelandiae

Laurelia novae-zelandiae, commonly known as Pukatea, is a majestic evergreen tree native to the lush forests of New Zealand. This tall, handsome tree is renowned for its fluted base and pairs of glossy, dark green, toothed leaves. In a natural setting, Pukatea can soar to heights of up to 40m, but in domestic gardens, it usually ranges between 6-10m. From October to December, the tree graces us with small, greenish flowers, adding a subtle charm to its already striking appearance. This slow-growing tree has a dense, bushy habit and a columnar form that can last for many decades. Its leaves have serrated edges that beautifully complement the red new stems. Pukatea thrives in moist conditions, making it an ideal choice for sites near ponds and streams.
