Kunzea robusta, commonly known as kanuka, is a fast-growing New Zealand native tree prized for its resilience and soft, fine foliage. It features small, aromatic leaves and a textured bark that becomes more gnarled with age. In late Spring to early Summer, it produces a profusion of tiny white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to biodiversity-focused planting.
This hardy species is ideal for native restoration projects, shelterbelts, and large gardens where a naturalistic or coastal planting style is desired. It also works well as a screening plant due to its dense form. Kunzea robusta thrives in a variety of soil types, including poor or sandy soils, and tolerates wind, drought, and frost once established. Plant in a full sun to partial shade position with well-drained soil. It prefers moderate soil moisture but adapts well to dry conditions. Allow 2–3 metres spacing for use as a shelter or group planting.
At maturity, Kunzea robusta forms a tall, upright tree reaching up to 15 metres in height with a narrow to spreading crown.
