Helichrysum tumidium Selago, commonly known as Mountain Helichrysum or Strawflower, is an evergreen, low-growing shrub native to the rocky, montane, and subalpine regions of New Zealand's South Island. This plant is noted for its dense, spreading habit and attractive, scale-like, mid-green to grey leaves that lie flat around its stems. In its natural habitat, it thrives on coastal cliffs and rocky outcrops.
The plant typically grows up to 30 cm in height and spreads to around 30 cm. In late spring to summer, Helichrysum selago produces small, creamy-white to yellow flower heads at the tips of its stems, adding a subtle yet charming display to rock gardens and alpine settings. It is also suitable for coastal gardens due to its tolerance to wind and salt spray
