Hebe speciosa

Trimming: Lightly trim Hebe speciosa after flowering to maintain a compact, bushy shape and encourage fresh new growth. Avoid cutting hard into old woody stems, as hebes may not reshoot well from bare wood.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads once flowering has finished to keep the plant tidy and encourage further flowering where conditions are suitable. Cut flower stems back to just above healthy foliage.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth and strong flowering. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can encourage soft, leafy growth that is more prone to pests and disease.

Watering: Water regularly while establishing, especially through the first growing season and during dry weather. Once established, Hebe speciosa is reasonably hardy, but will benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods or extreme heat.

Pest Control: Check occasionally for aphids, scale, and mealybugs, particularly on soft new growth. Treat early with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, and prune out heavily affected shoots if needed.

Disease Management: Watch for leaf spot, downy mildew, and root rot in damp, poorly drained, or poorly ventilated conditions. Signs include yellowing leaves, brown or black spots, white-grey mildew growth, wilting, or dieback. Remove affected foliage, improve airflow, avoid overhead watering, and ensure the soil drains freely.
