Hebe Lavender Wand
Notify MeHebe Lavender Wand is a compact, evergreen shrub admired for its upright spikes of soft lavender flowers that appear from late spring through to early autumn. The blooms rise above neat, green foliage and attract bees and other pollinators over a long flowering season. With a tidy, rounded form reaching approximately 60-80 cm high and wide, it’s well suited to cottage, coastal, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Plant in full sun to partial shade in free-draining soil. Tolerates light frost and coastal conditions. Space plants 50-70 cm apart to allow for mature growth and airflow. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain a compact shape and encourages further flowering.
Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage bushy growth. Avoid cutting into old wood, as Hebes may not reshoot well from it.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower spikes to tidy the plant and encourage further flowering if conditions allow.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth and flowering. In poor soils, a second light feed in mid-summer may be beneficial.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in prolonged dry periods. Once established, Hebe ‘Lavender Wand’ is moderately drought-tolerant but prefers consistent moisture in free-draining soil.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though aphids or whiteflies may occasionally appear. Use insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: Watch for leaf spot or downy mildew in humid or poorly ventilated conditions. Improve airflow, avoid overhead watering, and remove any affected foliage promptly. Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot.
