Hebe Champagne
Hebe 'Champagne' is a compact, evergreen shrub known for its striking pink to mauve flower spikes that appear in flushes from late spring through to autumn. The blooms contrast beautifully with its glossy green foliage, occasionally tinged with red tones in cooler weather. With a rounded, bushy habit reaching around 60-80 cm high and wide, it’s ideal for borders, containers, or as low hedging in coastal, cottage, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Plant in full sun to light shade with free-draining soil. Tolerant of wind, salt spray, and light frost once established, making it an excellent choice for coastal locations. Space plants 50-60 cm apart for mass planting or edging. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy shape and encourage further flowering. A reliable, long-flowering shrub that brings colour and structure to sunny garden spaces.
Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact, bushy shape and prevent legginess. Remove any dead, damaged, or straggly growth in early spring. Avoid hard pruning into old wood, as it may not reshoot.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower spikes to tidy the plant and encourage a light repeat flowering.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, a second light feed in mid-summer can support healthy growth and extended flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Hebe ‘Champagne’ is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells. Prefers free-draining soil.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but check for aphids and scale insects-treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal leaf spot and root rot. Remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly. Avoid wet or heavy soils to reduce risk of root issues.
