Griselinia Canterbury Red
Griselinia Canterbury Red is a striking evergreen shrub distinguished by its glossy, deep green foliage with a subtle reddish-bronze tint on new growth. With a dense, upright habit, it makes an attractive choice for hedging, screening, or adding year-round structure to borders. Typically reaching 2-3 metres high and 1.5-2 metres wide, it suits native, coastal, and contemporary garden styles.
Performs best in full sun to partial shade with well-draining soil. Tolerant of wind, salt spray, and light frost, making it ideal for exposed or coastal sites. Space plants 80-100 cm apart for hedging. Prune annually to shape and encourage dense growth. Low-maintenance once established.
Trimming: Trim in late spring or early autumn to shape and control size, especially if grown as a hedge. Light pruning encourages dense, bushy growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches as needed.
Deadheading: Not necessary, as this variety is valued for its foliage rather than flowers.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and vibrant foliage. In poor soils, a second light feed in mid-summer can be beneficial.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in extended dry periods, especially in summer. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but prefers consistent moisture.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though scale insects and aphids may occasionally appear. Treat early with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Avoid overwatering, and prune to improve airflow if needed. Remove any diseased or damaged foliage promptly to maintain plant health.
