Elatostema rugosum, commonly known as parataniwha or New Zealand begonia, is a herbaceous ground cover plant endemic to New Zealand. Growing up to 1 metre high, it thrives in wet, shaded environments such as gullies and stream sides. The plant features elongated green-purple leaves, adorned with prominent veins and a serrated edge, giving it a unique and striking appearance. Intriguingly, its common name, parataniwha, translates roughly to "home of the taniwha", referencing the presence of a taniwha.
