Disphyma australe

Disphyma australe, commonly known as New Zealand Ice Plant or Horokaka, is a charming, low-growing succulent native to New Zealand. This evergreen ground cover has fleshy, bright green leaves and vibrant, daisy-like flowers that range from pink to purple throughout the warmer months.

Ideal for rock gardens, coastal gardens, and xeriscaping, Disphyma australe excels in adding texture and colour to dry, sunny areas. Its spreading habit makes it an excellent choice for erosion control on slopes and banks. This succulent is also suitable for containers and can be used as a ground cover in mixed plantings. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, Disphyma australe is highly drought-tolerant and perfect for coastal conditions.

At maturity, Disphyma australe forms a dense mat reaching up to 15cm in height and spreading extensively. For optimal coverage, space the plants about 30-45cm apart.

Trimming: Lightly trim in late winter or early spring to maintain a neat appearance and remove any dead or damaged stems. Pruning encourages dense growth and helps control the plant's spread.

Fertilising: Generally, Disphyma australe does not require fertilisation. If growth appears slow, apply a light, balanced fertiliser in early spring. Avoid over-fertilising, as this plant thrives in nutrient-poor soils.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Disphyma australe is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent root rot.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. However, keep an eye out for common pests such as aphids and mealybugs. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

Disease Management: Disphyma australe is typically disease-resistant. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overwatering to prevent potential fungal diseases. Remove any affected plant parts promptly to maintain plant health.
